Everyone has their tricks in the art of demisting the car’s windows during a cold winter morning. Put the defroster with the windows open? Change the air conditioner to cold instead of hot? To decide what the fastest way to achieve it is, we must use the scientific method.
But no, we do not need to find out on our own. That’s why NASA engineer Mark Robber has his own YouTube channel. After reasoning a bit and trying several combinations, Mark discovered a way to get rid of windshield fog in half the time we use normally. These are the steps to follow:
- To understand this method, we have to know some things. For example, that the vapor is actually a lot of small drops of water in condensation: the vapor has gone to liquid state because at low temperatures the air can contain less water than at high temperatures. The scientific reason why this happens is because, the higher the temperature, the more energetic the water molecules are and the easier it is for them to leave the liquid state.
- Seen in a simplified way, hot air can contain more water vapor than cold air. Knowing this, it is easy to understand that the first thing we need is to heat the car’s temperature with the heating. Turning on the air conditioner helps extract moisture from the car by moving the air through the circuit. Turning off the recirculation introduces new air into the car, which increases the ability to contain steam. And finally, opening the windows helps to mix the humid air inside with the dry air outside.
For several years, the only acceptable way to repair a water drip on the windshield was to remove it completely and reinstall the glass. The concern was the potential development of rust in all the windshield frame, especially in view of the front part and rear glass are the structural components of the cover and add rigidity to an area that is otherwise weak.
It was later discovered that water leaks are the result of poor adhesion between glass and urethane, not the urethane to the structure. Consequently, in the early 1990s, General Motors issued a Technical Service Bulletin recommending that water leaks be repaired from inside the car.
- Sit inside the car and carefully fold back the roof liner into the general area where the water is leaking. Tell an assistant to pour water slowly over the windshield.
- Light up with a flashlight over the area where the water begins to drip. Grab the drops of water with a towel and continue to watch until the water stops. Dry the area well.
- Apply a small amount of silicone sealant to the exact spot where the water is dripping. Use just enough to cover the area. Press the silicone into the hole with a sweeping motion. Clean the area several times and apply a small amount of sealant. Do not apply an excessive amount of sealant.
- Test the repair after allowing the sealant to dry for two hours. Use a flashlight to check that the dripping has been repaired by telling the attendant to pour water over the windshield.
Tips & Warnings
- This is a very reliable and permanent repair.
- Leaks that occur after a windshield has been replaced are of unknown origin and the windshield should be removed and re-sealed.
Instead of being laminated glass, some windshields are created with a more durable transparent acrylic compound commonly known as Plexiglas. It will not shatter like a typical glass windshield and is therefore used in cars used for racing or activities such as off-road driving. Although it is a strong material, Plexiglas can still crack if it encounters too much applied pressure or extreme impact. However, a crack in the acrylic windshield can be repaired in a few steps.
- Make a hole in each end of the crack. This will prevent the crack from spreading.
- Fill the crack with Plexiglas / acrylic glass glue. This is a very thin solution that can drip, so have a rag handy to clean the solution that overflows the crack. Allow the solution to dry for the recommended amount of time as indicated on the acrylic glass adhesive package.
- Buff the surface. Use an electric polisher and soft polish pads to do this.
- Clean surface. Use the Plexiglas / acrylic glass cleaner and the remaining soft cloth to do this.
Tips & Warnings
- When working with chemicals, be sure to wear protective gloves and goggles. Also, work in a well-ventilated area.
Windshields are difficult to repair regardless of the problem. It takes patience and planning, a deep understanding of the process involved, and a realistic expectation of the outcome. The improvements may definitely be made, but restoring the damaged glass as a new one will have a highly unlikely quality. With this in mind, there are several processes that can be used to polish the blasted glass. Very worn glass should be replaced.
- Rub the windshield with a nylon bristle brush. Use a liquid detergent. This will remove any oily residue from the glass and clean the corroded areas of any particles that are trapped inside them. Wash the glass with water.
- Put on safety goggles and gloves. Apply a commercial polishing compound to the glass and start polishing using a variable speed drill set at the lowest. Most compounds contain cerium oxide as an abrasive. This will remove the entire area around the hole from the glass. As it will be removed, some pieces will begin to enter the hole and give a false impression of being uniform. To avoid this, constantly wash the area by lightly squeezing a sponge moistened with water to keep moisture in the compost.
- Rub the area with a brush and liquid soap again to remove the compound used and clean the corroded areas. Dry and inspect the polished site. Apply more compost and start polishing with a drill bit, keeping the area moist. Do not let the compound dry out as this could cause undesirable risks. Dampen continuously with a small stream of water along with sponge. Repeat this process until you get satisfactory results.
- Clean the glass for the last time and apply a rain repellent formula available at auto parts stores. These fill in small surface imperfections, enhance the appearance and add enhanced viability. They have the advantage of repelling water by reducing windshield wear.
Windows allow sunlight in our homes, and cool breezes will come through the windows are open. Sometimes these cool breezes are the result of an accidentally broken window and should replace the glass. Before you can measure the frame and replace the window, you will have to remove the broken glass from the frame window. Although window frames come in many styles and materials, glass removal is a direct universal process.
- Wear leather gloves to protect hands from cuts on sharp glass. Also protect your eyes. Often when removing glass, small pieces will break or pop, sending very small pieces in the direction of your face.
- Remove any large pieces of broken glass. Grab the crystal with your fingers and gently pull it out.
- Soften the mastic composite glazing around the glass and frame, with a hair drier or heat gun. The glazing compound can be brittle and hard, which is difficult to eliminate.
- Remove the composite soft glazing with a spatula. Scrape the compound from the window frame and the rest of the glass. New vinyl window frames, there is no composite glazing. Insert the spatula between the vinyl retaining strips and the window frame for retaining the strips of the frame.
- After removing the composite glazing, use pliers to remove the glass points that fix the glass to the structure. The glazing points are metal triangles with a small tab that sit against the window under the composite glazing in wooden window frames.
- Remove any remaining glass frame from the window. Brush the area to remove small particles of glass. When working with wood frames, lightly sand the area with medium-grain sandpaper. This will prepare the area for a new glass installation of the window.
Failure to properly clean the windscreen can lead to water spots on the glass. Streaks and water spots occur when using a low-quality glass cleaner. Even products known as Windex do not always do the job, because many tend to over dry the windshield instead of letting the cleaner evaporate. To remove water spots from the windshield, as with other rebellious debris, use a different form of cleanser.
- Apply generously the foam to clean glasses on the surface of the windshield.
- Clean the windshield in an upward motion with the razor blade. Start on one side of the windshield, and work the other side using the razor blade and cleaning foam.
- Dry windshield with paper towels. You can clean the dry foam without worrying about scratching it.
Sometimes the cost of buying a cheap used car is poorly installed films for tinted windows or window film with scratches on it. Poorly installed tinted window film can have air bubbles trapped in it and can reduce visibility, which are good reasons to remove it. Film window is made of two layers. The adhesive layer on the tinted window film is strong and can be difficult to see on auto glass as it is transparent and colorless. The process of removing the tinted glass window auto glass can take up to three hours.

Use steel wool and more ammonia to remove any residual adhesive remaining in the window. Clean the ammonia with paper towels before it dries.
The windshield pillars on a Chevrolet Silverado are trim panels that reside on the vehicle’s A-pillar and help support the headliner. These pillar panels are made of plastic, and may contain small treble loudspeakers for the stereo system. The process of upgrading the vehicle’s pillar loudspeakers with aftermarket models, or simply removing the panel from the headline, takes about five minutes per side, and does not require any tools.
- Place your fingers at the junction between the top of the windshield abutment on the inside driver’s side and the roof liner. Pull the panel toward the center of the truck to release the clips that hold it.
- Reach behind the panel and disconnect the wiring for the speaker, if the Silverado is equipped with pillar loudspeakers. Remove the vehicle panel.
- Put your hand into the hole in the passenger side stud panel and windshield. Pull the pillar panel toward you to loosen the clips that hold it. Disconnect the wiring from the speaker if equipped, then remove the abutment from the vehicle.
A windshield generally broken means it’s time to call the professionals, but you can save a lot of money if you remove the windshield before the technician arrives to install the new one. It is also a useful skill if you like classic cars, as finding specially curved glass parts can lead you to look in junkyards, where if you find it, you have to remove it and bring it home for the restoration project. The process is very simple, but it will take practice and strength.
- Gently lift any edge around the windshield using a flat head screwdriver. If you plan to reuse the edge, it is best to start lifting it with the screwdriver and slowly pull the rest, by hand. Do this on the outside and inside of the glass you are removing.
- By any joint that may be below the edge. Again, if it is in good condition, start by lifting it using the tip of the screwdriver and pulling the rest by hand. In this way you will be able to reuse it.
- Insert the cold knife between the windshield and the frame of the car starting with the top of the glass in the center. Taking care to hold the knife blade perpendicular to the glass (at exactly a 90 degree angle), bring the knife toward you to cut through the windshield frame seal. Repeat all this around the glass.
- Push the glass from inside the car. The windshield is resting on molded eyelashes in the frame then as you push the eyelashes, insert one of your 2 x 4 inches between the windshield and the frame to hold it away from it.
- Remove the windshield from the car by carefully lifting it.
Tips & Warnings
- Have someone help you lift the larger pieces, such as front windshields and rear windshields, as the size and weight of the glass is easier to handle with two people.
- If any part of the windshield breaks, be sure to completely remove that section by breaking it off the part. This will avoid unnecessary wounds when removing the windshield.

- Place an accessory to polish a drill and use it at a low speed. Skip the glass with the drill until the scratches disappear. Polishing or at high speeds can further damage the surface, therefore, be moderate when you skip the luster to remove the scratches.
- Apply a treatment for glass on the windshield to protect it from damage caused by snow, mud and water.
Tips & Warnings
- When mixing the polishing compound with the water, use distilled water to prevent it from being contaminated with ordinary water pollution. Practice on a piece of glass that does not serve to achieve a smoother repair surface.
- If your nail gets caught when you put it on the glass, hire a professional. These scratches may be too deep to repair with a polishing kit. Wear protective gloves when working with the polish to prevent irritation of the skin. For best results, do not work in direct sunlight.
